Progressive International Nut Chopper: A Review

progressive international Nut ChopperSometimes the smallest things can make life in the kitchen easier and more fun. Take for example the Nut Chopper by Progressive International. Chopping nuts isn’t a big deal, right? But here’s how I did it before they sent us a sample of their handy dandy Nut Chopper to try out: I took a bunch of nuts, placed them on a paper towel, covered them with more paper towel, and then beat them into submission with a mason jar.  more→

Progressive International 3-Quart Collapsible Salad Spinner: A review

Progressive collapsible salad spinnerAs a huge fan of salads of all kinds, I can’t believe that I lived this long without a salad spinner. So when Progressive International sent me their collapsible salad spinner* to try out, I was interested, but not not exactly excited. After one try, though, I was sold! I might never have put a salad spinner on a list of “must-have” kitchen gadgets, but I think I’ve changed my tune. I’m thinking about all the paper towels I wasted blotting delicate leaves or pressing liquid from kale. more→

Tumeric: The Elixir of Life – Review

tumeric beverages and elixirsTurmeric is often referred to as the queen of spices, as its medicinal powers (healing, antioxidant, cleansing) have long been valued. Its bright yellow hue adds a ray of sunshine to Indian curries, and its warm flavor is beloved by many. I’m not one of them. Its kind of woodsy, odd flavor puts me off, and if I use it at all, it’s quite sparingly. So it came as somewhat of a shock to me how much I loved the samples I received from Tumeric (yes, it’s spelled without the “r”): The Elixir of Life. In fact, I was crazy for the flavor, and soon became hooked. more→

World Cuisine Tri-Blade Spiral Slicer: A Review

zucchini noodles

As the weather gets warmer, I like to add more raw food to my daily fare. Last year, I was particularly intrigued with the idea of making raw “noodles” from zucchini and summer squash, as I’d seen demonstrated in a number of raw food videos and books such as Mimi Kirk’s Live Raw.*

To be honest, I doubt that zucchini—even raw—is as nutritious as pasta, which at least can boast protein and B vitamins; but in my case it has been more a matter of feeling lighter and digesting better. And anything noodle-y, whether made of squash or some sort of flour, can serve as the backdrop for nutritious sauces like Spinach-Miso Pesto. more→

George Foreman Indoor/Outdoor Grill – a review

George Foreman Indoor/outdoor electric GrillSome time ago, I wanted to develop some new recipes for grilling veggies and plant-based proteins for the summer entertaining chapter of Vegan Holiday Kitchen.* When I first developed grilling guidelines for Vegetarian Celebrations, many more years back than I care to admit, I had a somewhat basic charcoal unit. When it came time to retire this barbecue, I found myself less willing to stand over hot flaming charcoal—and even less willing to putter around with a gas unit.  more→
