This exotic blend sips like a fancy cocktail, but skips the hefty bar tab. Melon is hydrating, and rich in vitamin C and anti-inflammatory lycopenes, while rosemary contributes awesome flavor and antibacterial backup. The combination makes this your secret immunity agent! Maca powder, which has so many notable health benefits, has a caramel-y flavor that blends well into smoothies of all sorts. Here, it teams well with the strawberry, banana, and vanilla flavors. If you’re new to maca, use the lesser quantity; if you’ve been using it, allow for 2 teaspoons per serving. This makes about two 12-ounce servings. Photos by Ollzha.
I haven’t been on a bender since well before I had kids. But sometimes I’ll get “over served” at an event, or a new cocktail might leave me a bit more bleary-eyed than I’d like. That’s when I turn to this refreshing concoction. The melon and cucumber help to hydrate you, while the salt and mint aid in settling your stomach. I tried a few different variations until I realized that, unless the melon is frozen, the texture is more of a slushy than a smoothie. But, to be sure, it is a very delicious slushy! The cool thing is that the pineapple and the watermelon combined are sweet enough so no extra sweetness is needed. The watermelon flavor is so pronounced and pure that it fuels my determination to never stoop to eating any “watermelon-flavored” creations again! Recipe contributed by Carrie Forrest. more→
This smoothie brings back happy memories of eating gobs of pistachio ice cream with my cousins at Jones Beach. Pistachio was always one of my favorite flavors. The texture is smooth and thick like an old-fashioned milk shake. Pistachios contain large amounts of antioxidants, beta-carotene, vitamin E and lutein compared to other nuts. They are also lower in calories than other nuts and are loaded with flavor and healthy fats. Contributed by Helyn Dunn, from Helyn’s Healthy Kitchen.
Off-season, you can use frozen berries, though this refreshing drink is best with fresh berries in season. A bit of carbonation gives this drink a nice sparkle.
This is the most wonderful fruit smoothie, sweet and delectable. The more powerful your blender, the smoother and better this will be. If you really love smoothies, you may find it worth investing in a good-quality, high-speed machine. From The New Complete Vegetarian by Rose Elliot (Sterling Publishing, 2010). more→
