Eastern European-style haroset (sometimes spelled charoset) is a sweet condiment served as part of the Passover Seder served with matzo. It’s made of essentially of apples, walnuts, and wine; proportions may be varied to taste. One of the important symbolic dishes of Passover, it represents the bricks used by the Jewish slaves to build Pharaoh’s cities.

Makes about 2 cups

  • 2 large sweet apples, peeled, cored, and diced
  • 2/3 cup walnuts
  • 1/4 cup sweet Passover wine
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons agave nectar or other sweetener, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pinch each: nutmeg, allspice

Combine all the ingredients in the container of a food processor. Process until coarsely pureed. Store in an airtight container until needed.
