12/6/13 Giveaway Friday: The Lucky Ones and Vegan Express

The lucky ones by Jenny Brown adn Vegan Express by Nava AtlasToday’s giveaway features two very different books that go very well together. If you’re on the fence about going vegan and are looking forward to something that might serve as your tipping point, I highly recommend The Lucky Ones: My Passionate Fight for Farm Animals by Jenny Brown with Gretchen Primack. It’s not a graphic exposé of the factory farm industry (though it does touch on that nightmare) buy one woman’s journey from surviving childhood cancer (to which she lost a leg) to founding the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary. As described on the back cover, only her ever-loyal cat kept her from the depths of despair. Some years later, Jenny made the connection between the pet she so loved, and the animals on her plate.

The only reason I’m giving away this heartfelt, highly readable book is because I still have the hardcover copy, and the publisher very kindly sent me the paperback edition not too long ago. The original stays in my personal library! What I love most about this book are the descriptions of the rescued farm animals, and their distinctive personalities — a reminder that these animals aren’t “meat” but social beings who give and receive love, much like any dog or cat that we might consider part of our family.

So what to do and what to eat once you’ve decided to stop eating sentient beings and their byproducts? Vegan Express is a good way to start, featuring more than 160 recipes, plus lots of tips and menus for meals that can be made with ordinary ingredients in no time flat.

To enter to win both of these books, which will come to the winner as a set, simply leave a comment below, telling us why you’d like to have these books in your personal library. Make sure to leave your e-mail address in the field that requests it, so that I have a way to reach you. Entries will be accepted from 2:30 pm Eastern Standard Time on Friday, December 6, 2013, to 9:30 am Eastern Standard Time on Saturday, December 7, 2013. Good luck!

I have been a great fan of Nava’s plant based recipes. Even though I have not gone Vegan yet, I am constantly looking for ways to include pure plant based dishes for my family as I think its the best to offer by Mother nature.
Having these books will make a great addition to my personal library.

    Thanks for a great giveaway.

I really want to win these books! I am not yet vegan. I am struggling between my brain and my life. I was incorporating more and more plant-based meals into my weekly dinners, like Meat-Free Monday, but several times a week. But my family is really fighting me on this issue, they want their meat, and this thought, more and more and more, makes me sick to my stomach. I try to convince them that I am trying to help them be healthier, and the planet healthier, but it’s like I am talking to a wall. I know that this is an issue for so many other mom’s out there! The more I can learn, hopefully, I will have more in my arsenal to convince my family it’s the right thing to do!

I would love these wonderful books to add to my new vegan library. I’ve heard so much about both authors and have wanted to try some of their recipes. I’m new to vegan (since September) and I’ve been putting together recipes and cookbooks to teach myself this whole new way of cooking!

I would like these books in my library to help my children understand why I am bringing them up vegetarian. They cannot tolerate dairy so vegan cooking suits them well. It is nice to have inspiration for vegan meals when children can be very picky. Our whole family would benefit from these books, so pick me!

I absolutely LOVE the Wild About Greens cookbook and am excited about Vegan Express! I so want to visit the Farm Animal Sanctuary and would love to read Jenny Brown’s book. You guys so inspire me!

  6. Nicole

I would love to win as I’m still new to vegetarian – 1 year- and want to go vegan but have many questions. I feel this would help me make 2014 vegan. Thank you for considering me!

  8. Lori Simmons

Though I truly enjoy searching the internet for tasty plant-based recipes, I’d really like to add this cookbook to my collection. And I love a great story!

I originally went vegan completely for health reasons. I had always loved animals but never made the connection between the animals I loved and the ones that ended up as food. When I finally grasped the connection, my whole outlook on life changed. I LOVE reading vegan books. I love to hear about their journey to a compassionate lifestyle. And you can never have too many great vegan cookbooks! :)

I would love to win! I’m on the edge of being vegan and just need a little help after 5 years of being vegetarian! Thanks for the opportunity!

  11. Leslie

The more knowledge we vegans have, the better we are able to illustrate our point/beliefs/lifestyle/compassion to the not yet vegans out there.

  12. Claire

I keep borrowing Vegan Express from the library (probably 5+ times now) so it would be wonderful to own it!! The Lucky Ones looks very inspiring as well.

  13. Megan

I would certainly love those books. I am trying really hard to switch from lacto vegetarian to total vegan. Recipes are always good for inspiration :)

  14. Romina Capasso

I recently went vegan from having been lacto-vegetarian for almost 30 years and although I love to cook; it’s not easy to think outside the milk box.
Also I work in a lacto-vegetarian restaurant and want to introduce vegan alternatives, so won’t you please be my inspiration?

Have been Vegan since February. My husband had bypass Sept 2012 which helped make the decision. We are on full board and will never go back. I would love to win Vegan Express to help us on our journey.

  16. Kelly H

Having such great and inspiring Vegan bloggers has helped me stick to my life style change and actually learn to love and have a passion for it. I want to thank you for everything that you do. You help tons and tons of people without even realizing it. Thanks also for having give-aways! I will keep my fingers crossed to one day win something :)

I have made a concerted effort to make our eating habits healthier, but now with my husband’s gout issues I feel more of a push is needed, I would love these books to inspire us both and help us fine tune the changes we’ve made ;D

My granddaughter and I are transitioning to a plant-based diet, and are reading and learning as much as we can. I discovered Nava’s “Wild About Greens” book just this week, and are eagerly awaiting for it to arrive from Amazon. I am really excited about our future re: an exciting new way to eat and live according to our moral/ethical prinicipals, and to sharing our new-found knowledge with family and friends who are like-minded. We used to own a farm, many years ago, so I’ve seen what goes on there, and even on a very small scale, I could not accept killing animals and then eating them. I would never do that again! So, the book “The Lucky Ones” is very much akin to my new-found way of thinking, and I’m sooo glad that someone has put all of those kinds of thoughts into words so that others won’t have to learn ‘the hard way’ – like I did – I would love to win these books!

These books would be a great addition to anyone’s personal library. Everyone has a story to tell. A library full of inspirational and compassionate stories are the best “pick me up” books to have. In my opinion and many others, all animals are family. Working in the animal welfare industry, it is always amazing to hear peoples stories and how they got to where they are today. I enjoy their stories and mostly the successes.
Recently, I have learned I am gluten intolerant, so I have been searching out new vegan recipes that I can try out.
These books sound amazing, and I would love to include them in my library even if I am not chosen.

  21. Nancy

Thank you for the chance to learn more about both of these topics which are close to my heart. In particular, I sould love to learn as much as I can about preparing Vegan dishes. I am new to Veganism, as I have been a vegetarian, and want to put together a diet not only for myself, but for others.

  22. Monica

I transformed my diet 1.5 years ago after a difficult split from my husband. These books will help me continue on the positive journey I’ve been setting for myself.

  23. Katrina

    Great giveaway! Thanks for hosting!

I’d love these books because, frankly, I adore books. That they are vegan books is just the cherry on top. :)

  24. Andrea

Both of these books sound wonderful! As a relatively new vegan, I am looking to expand my repertoire and my knowledge about compassionate living.

  25. Joanne

I would adore to have these books so I can learn more about being vegan and help educate my friends and family.

  26. P. Cohn

We like quick, easy vegan recipes for our family. Our kids are old enough to ask questions about a vegan lifestyle and resources help.
