This is so simple that it barely qualifies as a recipe! But it is invariably a huge hit, and makes believers out of tofu skeptics. It can be served as a simple protein dish on the dinner plate, or as a hot appetizer with cocktail toothpicks. Of course, if you use VegKitchen’s recipe for Quick Vegan Barbecue Sauce, this becomes more than a 3-ingredient recipe, but since I’ve never found a prepared BBQ sauce I’ve been too impressed with, I like to take the few extra moments to make my own.
Serves: 6 to 8 (or more as an appetizer)
- Two 16-ounce tubs extra-firm tofu
- 1 1/2 cups store-bought natural low-fat barbecue sauce,
or Quick Vegan Barbecue Sauce, or more, as needed - Scallions for garnish
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.
Cut the tofu 1/2-inch thick, and blot well between clean tea-towels or several layers of paper towel.Cut the slices into dice. If you want the tofu to be super firm, use a tofu press ahead of time.
Stir together gently with 1 cup of the barbecue sauce in a mixing bowl, and transfer to a parchment- or foil-lined roasting pan.
Bake for 20 minutes, then stir in the remaining sauce and bake for another 10 minutes. If you’d like the dish to be a bit saucier, by all means, stir in a bit more barbecue sauce.
Arrange on attractive serving platter and garnish with scallions. Provide cocktail toothpicks or skewers for serving.

August 7, 2013 at 10:41 pmI followed your recipe and made these for my family the other day and they loved it. I used KC Masterpiece BBQ sauce and they tasted great! I’m going to cut bigger cubes of tofu and put them on a skewer next time. These were a total hit!
