Best Vegan Halloween Candy Brands (and they're easy to find!)

Just because you've gone vegan doesn't mean you have to miss out on the Halloween candy madness. In fact, some of the best candies out there are accidentally vegan. Whether you're filling a candy cauldron, assembling the ultimate treat bags, or just hoarding a stash for your Halloween movie marathon (same), this list is here to help you snack responsibly.

Here are the best vegan Halloween candies that prove you don't need animal products to have a scary-good time! Every brand on the list was re-checked for 2026 against the manufacturer's own ingredient information, and we've noted the fine print where a candy comes with a caveat.

How to Tell If Halloween Candy Is Vegan

You may be surprised at just how many candy brands are accidentally vegan, meaning they just happen to be vegan without making that a part of their marketing. Very few of them carry a vegan label, though, so the ingredient list is your best friend. These are the ingredients that pop up most often, so be sure to check your labels for them:

Gelatin. This is the chief offender in many gummy-type candies. Gelatin is made from animal skin and bones (usually pigs and cows) and gives gummies and chews their bouncy texture. Vegan gummies use pectin, starch, or plant gums instead. If you want to swap it out in your own baking, our vegan substitutions guide covers agar and other plant-based options.

Carmine. This is a lesser-known one. Carmine (also listed as cochineal, carminic acid, or Natural Red 4) is a red dye made from crushed insects. It shows up in some red, pink, and purple candies, so give brightly colored treats a second look.

Confectioner's glaze. That glossy shine on jelly beans, candy corn, and many candy-coated chocolates often comes from confectioner's glaze, which is another name for shellac, a resin secreted by lac insects. You may also see it listed as "resinous glaze" or "pharmaceutical glaze." Carnauba wax, on the other hand, comes from palm leaves and is vegan.

Milk ingredients. This one is typically easiest to spot, and it comes up constantly in milk chocolate candies, caramels, and nougat. Check the labels for milk, nonfat milk, milkfat, butter, butterfat, cream, whey, casein, and lactose. The allergen statement ("Contains: Milk") is a handy shortcut.

Eggs, honey, and beeswax. Egg whites turn up in some surprising places, like marshmallow-style and nougat candies. Honey sweetens some hard candies and chews, and beeswax is sometimes used as a coating instead of plant-based carnauba wax.

Check the exact variety, not just the brand. Formulas change between product lines, seasonal shapes, and countries. Classic Skittles have no gelatin, for example, but Skittles Gummies do, and Swedish Fish and Sour Patch Kids both sell "Chews" versions made with gelatin. A few ingredients, like mono- and diglycerides or "natural flavors," can come from either plant or animal sources and usually aren't labeled either way, so how strict you want to be with those is up to you.

What about Sugar?

Sugar can be a hot topic in the vegan community, as it can often be tough to tell if a specific brand is vegan-friendly or not. What's the issue? Some brands use bone char in the process of refining their sugar. This is especially common in the USA. Beet sugar, certified organic sugar, and dextrose (corn sugar) aren't filtered through bone char.

But of course most candy brands do not disclose the source of the sugar used in their manufacturing, or they use multiple sources. Because of this, many vegans choose to not overthink sugar. My personal approach is to purchase vegan-friendly sugar brands for use in my own home cooking, but not to overthink it too much when buying commercial products. There's only so much you can do. The same goes for "may contain milk" warnings: they flag shared equipment for people with allergies, not a milk ingredient in the candy itself.

Vegan Halloween Candy FAQ

Are Skittles vegan?

Classic US Skittles are. The ingredient list on Skittles' own site has no gelatin, carmine, dairy, or shellac, and they're coated with plant-based carnauba wax. Skittles Gummies are a different story: they're made with gelatin, so leave those in the store.

Is any mainstream Halloween chocolate vegan?

Rarely. Most fun-size chocolate bars are made with milk chocolate, and even many dark chocolate candies include milkfat. If chocolate is a must, look for bars that are specifically labeled vegan or dairy-free, or bake up a batch of vegan Halloween cupcakes instead.

Does "may contain milk" mean a candy isn't vegan?

Not necessarily. That line is an allergen advisory saying the candy was made in a facility or on equipment that also handles milk. There's no milk in the recipe itself, so most vegans are fine with it, but it does matter if you're handing candy to a child with a dairy allergy.

What's the best vegan candy to hand out to trick-or-treaters?

Smarties and YumEarth are great picks because they're vegan and free of the most common allergens, so almost every kid who knocks can enjoy them. Dum-Dums, Twizzlers, and Jolly Rancher hard candy are cheap in bulk and easy to find at any grocery store in October.

Can a candy stop being vegan?

Yes. Recipes get reformulated, and seasonal or international versions of a favorite candy sometimes use different ingredients. It's worth a quick look at the label each Halloween, even for candy you've bought for years.
