Non-Vegan Ingredients to Watch Out For

You may be surprised at just how many candy brands are accidentally vegan - meaning they just happen to be vegan without making that a part of their marketing. But there are a few ingredients that pop up most often - so be sure to check your ingredient labels for these:

Dairy Products - This one is typically easiest to spot, and will come up often in milk chocolate candies. Check the labels for milk, butterfat, whey, or anything similar.

Egg Products - Egg and egg whites are also found in some surprising places.

Gelatin - This is the chief offender in many gummy-type candies. Gelatin is derived from animals (like pigs and cows), and is used to give gummy candies that chewy texture.

Carmine - This is a lesser known one. This ingredient is derived from insects and is sometimes used as a red coloring in food products.

    What about Sugar?

Sugar can be a hot topic in the vegan community, as it can often be tough to tell if a specific brand is vegan-friendly or not. What's the issue? Some brands use bone char in the process of refining their sugar. This is especially common in the USA.

But of course most candy brands do not disclose the source of the sugar used in their manufacturing, or they use multiple sources. Because of this, many vegans choose to not overthink sugar. My personal approach is to purchase vegan-friendly sugar brands for use in my own home cooking, but not to overthink it too much when buying commercial products. There's only so much you can do.
