7 Top Health Benefits of Maca Root

maca root

Here are the 7 top maca root health benefits. An ancient Peruvian root crop, maca is gaining popularity as a supplement and superfood. Maca root belongs to the radish family, and is most commonly available in powder form. Grown in the mountains of Peru, it has been called “Peruvian ginseng.”

There are no serious known side effects of maca root powder, but like any other superfood or supplement, it shouldn’t be taken in large amounts. When you first start using maca root, it’s best to begin by taking smaller amounts and building up; as little as 1/2 teaspoon is a good place to start. Just 1 tablespoon is an average daily dose. Rotating a few days on and a few days off is often recommended. For more on this, see 5 Easy and Tasty Ways to Use Maca Powder in Food.

A concise and useful book, Maca Root for Health and Vitality, is available on Amazon as an e-book and in paperback.

Please be aware that other than the nutritional benefits provided by the vitamins and minerals, the other benefits are largely anecdotal, as maca has not been subjected to very many formal studies.

If you’d like to compare various brands of maca, you can do so by exploring this page on Amazon.com.

1  Vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients
Maca is a rich source of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids (20 different kinds — that’s just about all of them!), and antioxidants. Glucosinates are just one of those antioxidants — the same substances that make broccoli, cabbage, and other cruciferous vegetables so good for you.

2  Sexual function, libido, and fertility
Maca has long been used to promote sexual function of both men and women. It’s thought to boost libido and increase endurance. It has also been used to balance the hormones and increase fertility. Note the these benefits are anecdotal, though one of the more studied aspects of maca is its role in male fertility.

According to an article in Web MD, The Truth About Maca, professionals differ on the effectiveness of maca, especially for libido. Some are skeptical, believing that it’s little more than a placebo. Others strongly believe in its effectiveness. You can read the entire article here.

3  Menstrual issues and menopause
Maca has been used to relieve menstrual issues and the side effects of going through menopause. Some women have used it to alleviate cramps and hot flashes, much as it has been used by indigenous South American cultures for millennia. Outcomes in this area are largely anecdotal, and shouldn’t be used in place of consulting with a practitioner.

4  Physical and mental energy
Many regular users of maca experience an increase in energy level within days of beginning its use. It’s also known for increasing stamina and endurance, which is why some athletes take maca for peak performance. When used in conjunction with a good workout regime, supplementing with maca may help to preserve muscle mass. Maca is also used by those seeking to sharpen and expand mental activity and memory.

Maca has been used as a remedy for ongoing fatigue. If you find yourself tired much of the time, experiment with maca to see if it helps. Just a small amount could be exactly what you need for a boost! An increase in mental energy and focus has been reported as well.

5 General health and disease prevention
As an adaptogen and tonic, maca may boost your overall health in a number of ways. It supplies iron and helps restore red blood cells, which aids in avoiding anemia and cardiovascular diseases. Maca is also believed to promote prostate health. The nutrients in maca have long been valued for keeping bones and teeth healthy and help heal wounds more quickly. Bear in mind that most of these claims, while certainly not unfounded, have not been sufficiently studied.

Be very cautious if you have a cancer related to hormones, like testicular and ovarian, among others. If you have these cancers, liver issues, or high blood pressure, you should consult with a professional before taking maca.

6  Skin health
Maca has been used for skin issues. For some users, it helps to clear acne and blemishes. Another benefit that some users have experienced is that it decreases skin sensitivity. In hot or cold weather, maca may help skin withstand extreme temperatures.

7  Mood and hormone balance
For those struggling with anxiety, stress, depression, or mood swings, maca may help alleviate these symptoms, though the evidence for this is anecdotal and its use shouldn’t replace professional treatment.

Hormone balance is key to regulating sexual function, mood regulation, disease prevention, and much more. Maca’s ability to balance hormones is often credited to its stimulation of the hypothalamus and pituitary glands. It may be the phytonutrients contained in maca that work to balance the endocrine system.

First of all thanks for the interesting post. I have been using maca root pills for 8 month now (with small breaks every month), now feeling great after being constantly tired and depressed. At this time my daily mood is great and the energies I have, I didn’t experience even when I was young. I started with small daily dose of 500mg and slowly increased till i got to optimal feeling of energies( got to 1000mg daily). It’s very important not to regenerate, as it might cause headaches and other incomfortabilities.

While Maca is a wonderful supplement powder and has an excellent history in helping people who suffer from fatigue to pms it should be taken very carefully. Your article is incorrect to say there is no known side effects — there are MANY known side effects — namely for women . When taken in high dosages or over a long period of time without a break it can cause hormonal imbalance, as just one example, and a nutritionalist (or even just a google search) will tell you this….

Maca is excellent and you must be aware of the correct dosage for your body.

Nava, I meant in my comment that it’s important not to exaggerate with the daily dosage, as it might cause you several not pleasant effects . Rena is right that it’s important to be aware of maca’s side effects and to take daily dose that is good for your body, and not more!

Hi Nia, I’m not sure if maca helps or hinders when it comes to attempting to become pregnant, but our article states that you should avoid maca if pregnant or lactating. I’m very sensitive to maca and you may be, too. It’s powerful stuff. if it’s not agreeing with you, listen to your body, and don’t use it any longer!

I love to put maca in my smoothies and I beleive it helps me to run longer and faster.
I also feel very alert and as though my mind is working much faster! I can ALMOST skip the coffee that day 🙂
I’m having menstral pains rught now so I decided to make a tea and see if it is as efficient for helping that. I’ve already had my limit of ibuprofen today so I was seeking some natural remedies,
For the tea I used decaf green tea with half a tsp of maca powder, half a tsp of honey, and splash of almond milk. I mixed the maca in last after the tea is mostly cooled down.
It’s VERY good but I think I’ll finish it in the morning because it’s night time and I’m worried it will keep me up 🙁
3 glasses of water and some stretching on the floor,
my cramps feel a little lighter but my head, legs, and back still hurt, however, that’s probably because I just worked 20 hours of the last 30 hours off and on!
    GO MACA!

Nessa, I’ve never heard anything specifically about maca and weight gain. You’ll need to do a bit more research! It feels to me almost like a stimulant, but I do wonder if it stimulates appetite rather than repress it (like medical stimulants do). Let use know if you find the answer!

I have been suffering with chronic yeast infections, and was told I have systemic candida. I am working towards flushing the candida out of my system, but I’ve been told my adrenals have been depleted since I’ve had so many infections. As the waste material of candida mimics estrogen, I would say my hormones are all over the show!! Would maca be useful for me during my healing period? And is it a common enough product to purchase? Thank you

    Hi Joan Price,

You said that maca helped you with fatigue and depression. How long did you take the maca supplements before you saw a difference? I just started taking it and I like the flavor. Maca kind of a nutty caramel flavor to it. I blend it in a smoothie with raw cocoa, ground chia seeds, vegetable protein powder, some frozen fruits like blueberries or strawberries and either a dash of stevia or monk fruit sugar. I also at times add some frozen papaya, butternut squash and even sweet potato or yam. It is an incredible smoothie and a great way to start the day.

    Hi Alex,

Dr. Sara Gottfriend recommends the following:

    Dr. Sara’s Hormone-Balancing Smoothie II

    2T raw cacao powder
2T maca powder (I like Navitas Naturals)
3T soaked chia seeds (I prefer this as my source of fiber – you might want less chia depending on desired thickness)
    1 serving vanilla protein powder
    12 oz water
Add to Vitamix (or your regular blender) and blend.

Dr. Sara notes that maca is proven in randomized trials to raise sex drive, and reduce anxiety and depression. Cacao at breakfast is associated with weight loss!

I personally use unsweetened almond milk, frozen strawberries and blueberries, 2 TBSP vegetable based protein powder, 1-2 teaspoons of maca, 2 TBSP ground chia seed, 2 teaspoons cocoa powder and some stevia or monk fruit sugar to sweeten it a bit. It’s a great morning starter. To create variety, I will use cooked and frozen butternut squash and omit the berries. On occasion I even used sweet potato. It really make for a thick smoothie or shake if you prefer.

I researched on how long to use maca and they recommend to use it for 3 months on and then off for a month, then repeat the cycle. I am sure that everyone is different so you can experiment.

    Health & Happiness to you.

I noticed that the day I have it, I think I have a increase on libido but the days I don’t have it, I have no feelings…I just wanted to know if having maca powder for some time increase the libido level and get me back to track..? Also when I had my blood test to check why I have this trouble with erectile dysfunction and low level of libido, the doctor said that the hormones in the blood tests looks normal. When I started having maca powder, I have headache but if I skip it for a day then I am fine.. I doubt if maca powder is changing my normal hormones. I once had antidepressants for two months and that is brought me this erectile dysfunction and low level of libido. I am now totally confused if I do need to have more maca powder. Can someone help me to take a decision..? Thank you…

I am going to add a smoothie with the maca and China into my late night shift for added get up and go. It is wonderful. I feel great.

After one month of me and my partner taking maca tablets I got pregnant. So yes taking maca tablets does get you pregnant.I’m 38 years old and my baby is one week old now. I did take the maca tablets in the first three months of pregnancy to keep balancing my hormones then stopped after that. The baby turned out fine and normal.

I have just started taking Maca. at first I took the recommended dose of a 1tsp. I didnt really feel any different. the 3rd day I put a little bit more than a table spoon . I feel high! I am giddy and racing all over the place! I feel tight chested and a little bit of a headache around my temples. I will reduce my intake tomorrow to 1tsp and see how it effects me from there. Will update you on hot flashes as this was my main reason to take maca.

I started maca about a month ago, putting about 1 tsp in my smoothies once a day. I noticed an energy increase within a day or 2 but within a few days started having daily severe headaches, difficulty sleeping and horrible acne, like the worst it’s been since my teens (I’m 36). I put 2 & 2 together a few days ago and thought it might be the Maca so I stopped using it about 3 days ago & my face is settling down but the other issues are still prevalent. Does anyone know if these 3 things are known side effects of Maca use? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

    I take maca (by NOW – 750mg)

Never had issues with it. I noticed when I do take more then one pill at a time, I will break out. So to answer your question, Ginny, you may be taking too much. Headaches can be from increased circulation. Do you drink enough when you take it? Also, eating 20 minutes before may help. The only “side effects” I got was mild acne (when taking two pills, not one) and my butt got bigger. lol

It does help with anxiety though. I believe it has to do with the right amounts of Vitamin C and B vitamins. I mainly only use the brand NOW as most are clear of junk and organic. Not all vitamins are created equal. Don’t just go and by whatever brand. Do research! Also avoid anything with soy crap in it.

I recently purchased maca powder to help with stamina, energy and mental alertness. On the back of the package it states that there is a chemical in the powder that has been linked to birth defects or infertility. Never having a child but wanting one in the future it has caused a bit of alarm. Should I take it or not?

    Michael:

I think women typically tend to worry a lot more than men do. And as such many more women than men would need something like this to replenish there bodies. But this certainly would help men just as much as women.

I do take maca. I do find it helps a lot with my energy levels. Especially when I’m strung out after working many long physical shifts at work.

@nateisha, you probably could use some essential fatty acids. There are 2 kinds omega 6 and omega 3. Omega 6 is more important. Sources include sunflower oil sesame oil and hemp seed oil. Omega 3 sources are flax oil and chia seeds as well as hemp seed oil. Not many nutritional sources ever tell you about EFA’s but they are very important. Probably the most overlooked nutritional item today. Your baby needed the best ingredients your body could supply. Most people are deficient in good PUFA’s. Most people eat ruined PUFA’s as found in processed oils. Unprocessed unheated oils are mandatory to optimal health. Maca seems like it contains a lot of omega 6 because its benefits are similar to those of omega 6 but they never list the amount of PUFA’s in it. They give the same usual popular benefits such as vitamins and minerals but not PUFA content, a severely overlooked nutrient.

Hi Mary.I’m 43 too, and trying it too. Throughout my life ive had many miscarriages early on in early trimester….lately im spotting lightly 2 to 5 days before each menst. cycle. I’m taking feminessence from whole foods. Its a maca specifically mixed for that, or do the box says. I hope we both have kids! You and I, Mary! Praying to the Lord also. BTW, for men , it may help to know my box of feminessence has a chart explaining that maca I think black maca in particular, is better for men, and feminessence claims their mix is specifically for women….if you want to learn more you may want to pick up a feminist since box from Whole Foods and just speak the back, if what they say is true.

I have hypothyroid problems and polycistic ovarian syndrome, I have been really bad lately and I was wondering if this would help me at all? I have literally all sever side affects of both and my whole endocrine system is down. I am getting treated for this but maybe this can help me reduce the medications intensity eventually and help me start a regular menstral cycle. I am only 20 and was wondering if it would be safe for me to try this out.If someone could let me know about anything that would be great. Thank you.

Excellent article, thanks. I’ve been using maca supplements for more than a year now to boost my energy and I’m very happy with the results. Had some problems with it at the beginning as I started taking it in its raw form and it messed my stomach. I stopped completely and started taking maca root it its gelatinized form after I heard that it was much better for the digestion and my stomach had no problems with it. I am taking maca powder as part of my daily diet and ithelps my energies very much.

I started added maca powder to my nutribullet smoothies as well. When I went to Sprouts and asked for it, the sells person showed me where it was, but that there was powder specifically for women and some specifically for men and that each male and female should take the right one for them, so if you are putting one kind of powder in your smoothies for yourself and your husband, I would be careful since different types have different benefits for men and women. You don’t want him growing breasts or you growing chest hair;)

If you have anemia, then Maca is good for you. It has a lot of iron, which you have not got if you are anemic. Maca is not good for those who have sleeping problems like insomnia, just don’t take it at night or at least 4 hours before sleeping because it boosts your body with energy.

Hi, I have been taken take Macca powder on and off for the last year. I am really happy to report that I have increased ENERGY, my DEPRESSION is now more under control to the point where the Doctor is happy for me to ditch the last half of my meds (have been slowly reducing it in last six months), My LIBIDO has been up so my hubby is double happy. I just feel more alive and less stressed when I take it, I have enough energy when I take it everyday or every other day to go on short jogs!! Not since I was a teenager have I been able or had the want to go jogging. I have a fluctuating thyroid and at the moment when taking the macca powder it seems to have levelled off so less heart palpitations and anxiety and less depression. IT’S WORTH TRYING IT LADIES!
I have a teaspoon everyday in a meal replacement way, I blend a banana, milk, macca powder and a teaspoon of mixed spice mix, that I make, with 100% isolate protein powder and drink for my breakfast. its yummy and way good for you!

I took a chance on this stuff cuz my brother had a vegan energy/protein powder that had it and said it was for energy and vitamins/minerals. Then I saw Organic Maca Root Powder in bulk barn and thought “what the hell, I’ll try it” Had NO knowledge of the hormonal balance it was capable of creating.. I just thought increased vitamins and energy would be good. I’ve suffered from social phobia(anxiety), depression, and low self-confidence for YEARS and it was progressively getting worse. I tried a few prescription drugs like Zoloft and Prozac and shit, with little improvement and severe side effects(which prompted the ‘all natural’ mindset I have today). Cutting out everything artificial I could helped over time. But from my VERY FIRST teaspoon of this stuff, I felt IMMEDIATE benefits and with continued use its only gotten better. I feel amazing- better than I have in years! ANYONE suffering from depression or anxiety or any physical or psychological problem that could be cause by hormonal imbalance NEEDS to give this a try, it has changed my life! Around the same time I started taking maca I also take 1/2 a teaspoon of fresh ground nutmeg on a daily basis. I feel like they work together to strengthen my mind- my memory is at least 5x better than it was before! Just my experience, hope its worth reading xD

For the last 4 nights…no waking up at night sweating or too hot! I am using 1 tsp in 8oz 2% milk every morning and every evening since it doesn’t affect my sleeping.

MACA DOES NOT cause side effects or hormone problems if overdosed or not started slowly. It nourishes the endocrine system to function optimally without actually changing any hormones. It is only beneficial. There is no such thing as excessive maca use.

About the gain weight! I do not know so much but it could be only if you do not exercise yourself. I workout everyday but can’t say I’m gainig neither loosing any weight. I recommend mixed up with other super food depending what are you looking for for example: for energy boost I mixed it with chia seed, hemp seeds or wheat.

I’ve taken Gaia brand for months now, no weight gain,in fact I lost 5 lbs,but I work out and am very active at 55.More energy, sleeping better, I have not seen redistribution of fat?I doubt it does that..Watch what you put in your mouth, usually why folks gain weight.over all,I think its worth taking along with a good Whole Food vitamen.

In 1995, after giving birth, I sufferred from CHRONIC hives for 1 full year (terrible facial swellings, welts that itched like crazy all over my face and body, including the bottom of my feet). Having to go out in public, for work or any other reason was emotionally painful for they were always present in varying degrees twenty-four hours a day. In 2003, the same thing ocurred again for 1 full year following the birth of another child. No physician, allergist or otherwise was able to help in any way. I used to cry myself to sleep due to the itching that could never be scratched to any satisfaction and don’t mention the the lips out to there, the swollen face, under eyes, etc. In 2010 following a hysterectomy, the hives came back in full force. Keep in mind that never before or in between any of these episodes have I ever had even a slight mark on my body that even resembled hives. I had never seen hives on anyone until I got them in 1995. I decided that the only connection between the 3 incidents was harmonal so when my one year mark came and went, then another 6 months the thought of living with this problem indefinately was too great to bear I did some research online trying to find a relationship between hives and harmonal changes. In so doing, I came across an article on the topic which included testimonies from many women saying that they too sufferred with chronic hives for years after menapause. In some of the testimonies, maca root was mentioned with positive results claimed by those who had tried it. I did not hesitate in trying to locate the item. I first bought the gel caps since the raw powder was unavailable but the pills were gigantic and difficult to swallow. I continued my search and finally found a source. In November, 2013 I started taking 1/2 tsp once daily but soon moved to one tsp and within a few days to a week, I realized a difference. I reduced by Benadryl (was of no real help to me anyway) intake which was 8 pills daily (2 pills four times daily) to 2 pills daily (one in the AM, one in the PM). Within a matter of weeks, I stopped taking the Benadryl all together and took only the maca root. During this time, my hives gradually subsided. In March of 2014, (26 months after dealing with this agonizing affliction), I felt certain they were gone for good, so I stopped taking the maca root. I am still totally free of all signs of hives and also lost the 15 lbs I gained from all the Benadryl I had been taking. I am convinced the maca root balanced out my harmones and i hope that this can help someone else. I did not get clearance from any doctor to use the maca root for they were no help to me in getting any relief from the hives and i did the research and found my own remedy but I will say that this was my experience and anyone who thinks this can help them needs to see their doctor to discuss their individual situation and obtain clearance. God Bless, all. I hope this was helpful!

I’ve been taking 500mg Maca powder capsules twice a day for the past two days and all of a sudden my skin seems brighter. My face usually looks dull without moisturizer but today I’m just glowing. So far I haven’t experienced the boost of energy.Actually it’s been the opposite. I’ve been feeling calm and mellow which is great because I’ve had issues with sleep since I was 12 (I’m 35). Tonight will be the earliest I’ve gone to sleep in months. So far, so good.

This article says not to take while pregnant or breastfeeding but I’ve talked to many many women who use maca while breastfeeding and there have been no issues, the whole point of me taking this is BECAUSE of hormonal problems. I guess the question is, is the risk worth the benefit? I’m putting my toddler at risk because I’m always angry stressed out and i can’t balance my hormones, I don’t want to look like a pizza anymore either, it’s depressing and embarrassing. Now I’m not one of those mothers who puts her kids at risk for personal gain. I haven’t had a single drop of alcohol even though they say you can have a glass, I would never risk it, I didn’t take the drugs they gave me for ppd cause there toxic crap, I have tried every thing under the sun and nothing is working. Exercise acupuncture eating habits drinking more water safe supplements oil pulling oil cleansing breathing techniques, I think my body just needs something more and maybe this is it. But I don’t want to put my toddler at risk, she’s 1.5 and breastfeeds 3-4 times a day. I already bought the stuff, I don’t knw what to do……

I have been eating maca for about 5 years. It is a food after all. I am and have always been a healthy person, (IQ over 155) and usually live healthy lifestyle as well. I dont smoke, drink or use recreational drugs. No health or sexual problems at all. I started taking 2 gel caps a day, feeling more energy in weeks, so gradually up to 4 or 5 capsules, my feeling of well being and energy increasing. One side effect of stomach upset, I read once the gel capsules and bother some peoples stomachs so I started emptying the maca into my coffee and within a couple of days my stomach is upset disappeared and I’ve had no problems with that again my physical and mental well-being have continued in my opinion to increase greatly including both physical and mental energy and the capacity to handle more thoughts and processes while i am working (I very recently read that monkeys given maca over a period of 6 months, equivalent to about three years in a human being, doubled their learning capacity) I feel so pleased with the results and confidence that I am NOT harming my health I have increased over period of 5 years my intake of Maca this is now about 5 pounds every 5 to 6 weeks and I feel excellent. I am more impressed with my experiment with maca, then with any other vitamins, herbs or exercise regime that I have tried over the last 30 years, I may be an anomaly, but I feel most people who are in generally good health could probably achieve the same results as I have, without any serious side effects, the same as I have done, I can see why many hundreds of years ago it was considered a superfood available only to the wealthy, and in more recent years was still considered such a valuable food product in many locations it was even used as a currency, many people today spend a good amount of money trying to achieve good health, while l I spend a minimal amount of money consuming 3 or 4 tablespoons of Maca day. I hope my experience will give someone the information they may need to make thier own health decisions.

maca root is the best thing that i have ever dealt with i had bought it because i read that it increases your sex drive and it also redistribute fat to go in your womanly areas but the outcome of my expierience with the root was remarkable it totally brought my horomones back to where they were when i first started my period i usually have 24 to 27 day cycle but while taking maca root i started getting my period every 30 days it had even my horomones out so good that i even got pregnant with identical twin boys but i had a miscarriage not because of the root it was something genetic. I would strongly recommend this root it does wonders for your skin if your dealing with any horomonal issues it helps ease the symptoms of chemical imbalances…. Its great i will say this if you don’t want to get pregnant don’t take it because you will….

I just purchased that Maca Powder.

Been doing research on it’s benefits so it is my first time taking it today.

I’d agree: DO NOT mix with plain water (I’m taking 1.5 teaspoons daily). The taste is NOT a good taste so definitely mix it with some sort of drink, or milk.

Again, it’s only my first day so we shall see what happens.

We have a store around here locally called Moms Grocery store and thank goodness they had it.

Another place if you’re in the DC Metro area is called “Smiles Herb Shop”, I called and they seem to have great prices per ounce.

Wish me luck with this new herb.

I too had hives while going through menopause and took maca root to balance my hormones. I use to have very scary hot flashes too, after taking maca root for about a week 1/3 tsp in am 1/3 tsp in pm I stopped having both hives and hot flashes, and it is great for your skin. I lost 15 pounds while taking it as well.I still take it for 3 week per mth and go off it for a week, but usually a week that is after when my moon cycle would be. I make sure I am on it during that time!

It’s concerning that people with cancer should not take maca, as many of us could be walking around with the very early stages of cancer and not know it. We could be speeding up our death then if that’s the case. People have lots of glowing results to share but they’re all short term. It sure would be comforting to have some long term understanding about maca.

I am a naturopath and have used maca for my clients for a long time. The best advise I can give is to try it, start slow and just note if why you are taking it is changing. I always get clients to record what is occurring so that they don’t have to rely on their memories.
Use it to help you get pregnant it is great but you will need to add other supplements/foods in as well to increase your chances and to make sure that the growth and development of the baby is at optimum levels. It is great for all hormone issues and this can include acne. Good luck with it.

I have been post-menopausal (surgical) for several years and also struggle with adrenal insufficiency. I was actually diagnosed with borderline Addison’s disease at one time. IOW, my body produces very little cortisol to assist in the production of other hormones for female parts I no longer have. Wondering if anyone has experience using this with either situation. I have very low energy – crash big time in the afternoon, and terrible insomnia. I’ve had to stop working. Anyone using this have a similar history?

My daughter told me about Macaroot pill form. I’ve got to do something…not taking hormones, doctor advised, because of the risks. How long does it take to relieve the hot flashes? Anyone know this? Dawn, it would be fine to mix maca into a drink that’s already been heated, but the idea is more that it shouldn’t be cooked or baked, as it is believed that this might compromise some of the beneficial nutrients and other substances it contains. Hope that helps!

Sarah, If ur pregnant you might want to talk to your doctor before trying maca. If u lack energies perhaps discuss with your doctor or a certified dietician to see what healthy food you can implement into your daily route that will give u your energy. Talk to a doctor. Maca isn’t really nothing all that great I been trying it for months. Fruits and whole grains give me my energy. Maca isn’t some miracle produce. Things are only what you believe it is.

My partner and I have blended a combo of Maca and Moringa, we call MacaRinga. Our Moringa is grown in California, and has over 90 minerals and nutrients as opposed to the 4 from Moringa grown in India. The difference is very noticeable when people give us their feedback. The WATER THAT FEEDS OUR PLANTS IS FROM HOT SPRINGS DEEP UNDERGROUND WITH MANY minerals that the plants obsorb. Moringa will be the next big Organic health Herb to be in demand. We add other herbs in some of our blends like Hawaiian Blue Spiralina, flavors, etc.

For years, every month I had horrific cramps and sudden “floods.” Giving birth to my children was less painful. Birth control pills were like a “miracle” cure….. until I started acting mean because of mood swings I had never had before. My children and husband did not deserve this “other” person I had become.
Then I found the pre/peri menopausal formula of the Femmenessence maca. It took away my “labor” pains, my flooding (like my water had broken), and I was back to being myself. The only problem was that eating a well balanced diet and exercising did nothing to stop the weight gain. I went from having 15 extra pounds, to becoming 10lbs away from being diagnosed as OBESE, not just overweight. The extra weight caused a whole lot of other health problems. I had to stop the pre/peri menopausal formula of the Femmenessence maca and go back to suffering, even after going to half the dose. I have since found other natural remedies that help with the monthly symptoms, but nothing works as well as the Maca. I am still working on losing the weight I gained. Does anyone know if another brand of Maca might work better? Is there a vitamin or mineral that would help the Maca to work for me? It gets expensive and embarrassing when you are always having to buy bigger clothes. If anyone could offer a helpful response, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

For perimenopausal hot flashes…I started using purple maca for hot flashes last week. It works! They immediately lessened, became shorter and less intense, and now they are gone. (Black cohosh was not working after a few weeks of taking it for hot flashes, then I read it shouldn’t be used unless you are fully menopausal, which I’m not sure I am yet, as it will cease your flow altogether). 1 tsp in some kefir, or milk, with maple syrup, a dash of cinnamon and a pinch of sea salt. These 3 things balanced out the taste very nicely. I’m going to lessen the dosage tomorrow to 1/4 tsp, and hope it continues to work.

It isn’t cheap as 21 packets, a 21 day supply costs around 40.00 US dol. in Hawaii. Will have to check around for a cheaper one if it works but will be so relieved, it may be worth it as I have already spent alot on others that haven’t worked enough. We’ll see. Hope this helps.

You’ll never beleive where I got mine! I found it at TJ Maxx in their food aisle. The brand I got was Divine Organics and it’s pure raw Maca. I just started today, 1 tsp in my morning protein/fruit milkshake. Didn’t notice much difference in the flavor, it tasted good. Now that I think about it, I have felt “good” all day. Can’t wait to try it again tomorrow. Good luck to all who are trying to find it.

I am on day four of using maca and I had to write about it I work 50 hours a week and I feel tired as soon as I get home, but today I woke up early and did housework and went to a 9 hour shift and came home not feeling rundown at all. I have a healthy diet and I drink plenty of water but nothing has ever worked to give me the natural energy like maca. It’s more like an awake happy feeling not anything like caffeine kind of like the feeling you get after a run…. So happy today

I’ve been taking Maca for a few months (taking 3 days off every couple of weeks) It’s great for relieving the pain in my joints, trigger finger. (I’ve been tested for rheumatoid arthritis and don’t have it)
However taking a while teaspoon a day. .increases morning anxiety and general depression. Therefore I take just an 1/8 of a teaspoon daily and really notice the difference when i haven’t. Be guided by your body as too much also increased random hot flashes.

Every morning a take 60 gram of yoghurt or kefir and I put in a theespoon of maca and than I put different nuts and oatmeal, than sometimes I add chia seeds. This is very healthy and you don’t need to eat bread or other grains. This avoids that you want a snack around 10 o’clock, you can easely wait untill noon to eat again.

Donna mentioned about uterine fibroids in an earlier post. I drink raspberry leaf tea that I get from vitacost online. In looking up raspberry before buying I had seen that some women had stated that it had helped them and showed a decrease in the cramping. Now I do not have uterine fibroids but have read how raspberry leaf is good for the female system. I no longer have the extreme heavy bleeding I had before, the cramping so bad that led to almost crying is gone to the point I barely have any cramps. My mother has ovarian cysts. She has not had them checked since drinking the tea but since I got her drinking the tea she no longer has the pain during her menstrual cycle from the cysts. Just something to look into to see if it helps you. I drink it as a tea. The bag I got from vitacost.com was made by frontier and it has a nice light raspberry taste and smell.

Hi, I have fibroids (as Donna) too and I take maca, which I think if not help at least won’t harm. You need to experiment of course (listen to your body). Let’s say take it 4 days a week and then 3 days off. But it should be gelatinized maca, otherwise it creates lots of gas and bloating. I also heard that molasses is good for fibroids. Try it all and see for yourself. However if anyone knows a perfect receipt, which could help get rid of fibroids I would be very, ery greatful myself! I had fibroids removed twice, but they keep comming back :((

As you mentioned to Carmen, it’s important to get as much info as you can about using different foods/supplements during pregnancy, & working with someone local who is knowledgable is ideal.

Great info on benefits. WebMD says there may be negative side effects and because my friend has breast cancer it caught my eye.

From WebMD: “..Maca is LIKELY SAFE for most people when taken in amounts found in foods. Maca is POSSIBLY SAFE when taken in larger amounts as medicine (up to 3 grams daily) for up to four months. Maca seems to be well tolerated by most people.

    Special Precautions & Warnings:
Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Not enough is known about the use of maca during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use.

Hormone-sensitive conditions such as breast cancer, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, endometriosis, or uterine fibroids: Extracts from maca might act like estrogen. If you have any condition that might be made worse by exposure to estrogen, do not use these extracts.”

    Hello,
I take Maca as a capsule. The powder is just put into capsules so it’s a pill form and you won’t need to worry about cooking with it or adding it to smoothies. It’s completely tasteless in the capsule and it doesn’t matter if you drink it with a cold drink or a warm/hot tea or any beverage. Most Health Food stores carry it! I take Brad King’s ULTIMATE MACA ENERGY – Sun-Dried Non GMO 750mg 90 vegetarian capsules. I notice a difference when I’m taking it daily as to compared to when I miss a week or two. It’s wonderful stuff.

Google, maca in Peru and other countries and you will come up with completely different information. This is a good start about maca but it is not complete. I think everyone is afraid of being sued. My best friend took small doses of maca during her entire pregnancy and it helped tremendously. Do your research, but don’t believe everything!

For exhaustion/fatigue ; ingest Coconut BUTTER which is another way of saying “Coconut Cream”
How ever do reserch on it so you get quality product(!!) with no adverse additives.
Am trying Maca now, taste was a little offensive but just had to try it with other foods & smoothies. That helps! Been 5 days so far off & on.. So will keep working with it.
Med Dr gives me has toxic affects, monitors me closely yet knows little about nutrition.

Carlos, most maca comes from Peru which is practically next door to you! There must be some good way to source some local maca. I’m sorry I can’t be more specific!

Maca has elevated my energy level immensely and I noticed immediately. I am adding a half of a teaspoon to my kale/spinach drink about 3-4 times a week. Not only has my energy increased drastically my mood is much better, I am not as irritable. I purchased mine from Whole Foods in the USA for $6.99 for the smaller bag. I highly recommend this!!!!!

Maca’s benefits are well regarded though largely anecdotal, so it’s best to say that it can’t hurt at any age!

Yes, it’s kind of distinctive but not overwhelming, a bit hard to describe. It’s been described as malted or nutty; in any case, it blends best in sweet things like unbaked energy sweets or smoothies.

It’s pretty packed with nutrients. I had some stomach problems first time I tried, and the taste is usually not the best, but there can be no doubt about the benefits (once you actually get used to maca).

Alice, we’re not qualified to say if maca is safe or not during pregnancy — I assume you must have googled “maca root and pregnancy” — maca has long been used for fertility, but that’s a different issue. I would suggest looking for some major brands of maca root and connecting with the companies to see if they have a statement on their sites about that, perhaps in their FAQ. Good luck!
